After seeing Taylor Swift’s performance at the VMA’s this year, I knew my next article had to be about her song “Shake It Off”. This single is from her first fully pop-genre album 1989. (Thank you Taylor for finally realizing you are no longer a country girl.) And before I begin to become a “hater” for this song, let me just say, Taylor Swift does have much talent. No doubt about it, she is definitely one of this biggest acts in history. Moreover, her latest track “Shake It Off” has 544,000 downloads”; the highest amount this year. It is also the number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100, and her video for it has 18.4 million U.S. streams. Speaking of which, her video has offered up some debate. The video features her dancing in different styles, including twerking. Not only is this strangely un-Taylor of her, some people think using black females as her twerk stars is racist. I personally don’t, however everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
The song itself seems to be ridiculed. (Don’t worry, Taylor will just “shake it off”.) Although it is a catchy tune, the lyrics seem a little stupid. “Cause the players gonna play, play, play, play, play/ And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate/ Baby I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake shake...” I suppose she couldn’t think of anything better. (No offense to her song writing team.) Also, she seems to be evolving just a little. Now, not only is Taylor twerking, she is comfortable with calling her song’s beat “sick” with the words “Just think while you been getting down and out about the liars/ And the dirty dirty cheats of the world/ You could have been getting down to this sick beat…” *facepalm * Taylor, Taylor, Taylor, your beat just simply isn’t what a DJ would play in a nightclub. In fact, I’m pretty sure this song makes you the equivalent of an annoying pop boy band. Also very unnerving are the lyrics “And to the fella over there with the hella good hair/ Won't you come on over baby we could shake, shake, shake…” Did Taylor just make a dirty reference? Holy mother of God, what has happened to the world? To close, Taylor Swift’s newest single “Shake It Off” is sure to wow you.
